EDIT: made some minor corrections on Calvin so he doesn't stand out too much. That drawing is so old!

A fanart of Calvin and Hobbes (best comics strip that was, is and will ever be) in a semi realistic way. For all of those who know Calvin and Hobbes, you'll know that Calvin likes to distort reality (Hobbes being the best example), introducing parts of his child fantasies into everyday life. Well, the idea of the picture was to try to do a realistic Calvin (I hope I at least succeeded in making him more realistic than he is in the strip) but while still placing him in a background that would bear the influence of his fantasies and thus would look more like the comics strip's style. I didn't copy Watterson's style for the bg though (I'm not yet good enough to make photoshop look like watercolor), but I tried to make something similar to it.

I know that Calvin usually bears a much more agressive, determined, even often mischievous look on his face. But here I wanted to show another part of his personality: the innocence of childhood, which, despite Calvin being a great sinner, is very present in some episodes of the strip.
The picture is not perfect yet, but I don't think I'll work on it anymore, I like it the way it is now.


I discovered Calvin and Hobbes when I was 15 (I think), in a summer camp in Switzerland. I instantly fell for the strip's ambiance, humour, and Watterson's wonderful drawings. There are many funny strips, but no other can create the same feelings in me. I was a very imaginative little boy, and reading Calvin is like reading about my childhood a second time. (For instance, although I very rarely disobeyed my parents, me and my best friend used to invite girls to our birthdays in order to have persons to anoy all day long).

well I'm not going to say that Calvin looks too realistic LOL, I really like the idea of mixing the cartoon with a different, realistic look. Its a great idea. What I would say though, is that maybe *more* traditional bits are needed - if you ever wanted to rework it! If there was a more gradual transition between the two styles, maybe people might not feel Calvin "sticks out" so much

Yeah, you may be right. I don't know if I'll rework this pic (so many new projects + unfinished ones), but if I do I'll surely take your advice in notice :D
